TIL: Midnight Generation
Me and My Buddy Bill...RIP Grateful Red!

Welcome to the first edition of Things I Like — an ongoing series where I share the music, places, gadgets, and experiences that make life better after my quasi-early retirement.

One of the best parts of financial independence and living in Mexico is having the time and freedom to discover new music. That’s exactly how I found my current favorite band: Midnight Generation.

I first discovered them at the gym in San Cristobal de Las Casas. I was working out with Spotify in my earbuds when the song “Young Girl” came on as a recommendation. From the very first notes, I was hooked. The groove instantly grabbed me. I spent the rest of that workout searching for more of their songs and thinking, Where has this band been all my life?

Since then, I’ve gone deep into their catalog. We even saw them live in León last February — and it became my favorite concert ever. At 62 years old, as an American retired in Mexico, I don’t think I’m their typical fan, but I’m 100% hooked now. There’s no going back. They make me feel young again!

Midnight Generation: Greatest Techno-Funk Band Ever!

It’s honestly a little weird how much I go on and on about Midnight Generation with my friends. I feel like I’ve turned into a modern-day Bill Walton raving about the Grateful Dead. I just can’t help it — their music is that good.

Here’s what makes Midnight Generation so special to me:

1. Rhythmic Guitars à la Nile Rodgers
Sharp, funky rhythm guitar work that drives every song. Fernando Mares (lead vocals and guitar) channels that classic Chic-style groove perfectly.

2. Keyboards & Synthesizers
Warm, nostalgic synths layered with bright, modern tones. They create a glowing retro-futuristic sound that feels like 70s disco and 80s new wave got a fresh upgrade.

3. Smooth, Expressive Vocals
Fernando’s warm, versatile voice carries the songs beautifully. The harmonies are catchy and full of soul.

4. That Talk Box!
One of their signature sounds. It adds a fun, funky edge that always stands out — both in recordings and live.

5. Infectious Basslines & Groovy Drums
Thick, driving bass locked in with tight, syncopated drums and live percussion. There’s a slight Latin flavor that makes the music feel alive and danceable.

6. Polished Yet Energetic Production
Rich arrangements that sound great on headphones but absolutely explode during live performances.

7. Unique Mexican/Border Soul
Coming from Chihuahua, they blend classic American funk and disco with their own northern Mexican identity. That cultural warmth is what sets them apart.

My Favorite Midnight Generation Songs Right Now

  • “Young Girl” (the one that got me hooked)
  • “It Don’t Matter” & “Impala 1985” (my daily morning jams)
  • “You Knock Me Off My Feet” (this one always reminds me of my beautiful wife ❤️)
  • “E La Mia Donna”
  • “Ghosts”
  • “I Can’t Do Without You”
  • “Trouble” – The deep, epic grooves on this one are absolutely next-level.
  • “Hey Ya!” & “La La La” (two super fun tunes!)

Their music has become part of my daily life here in Mexico — perfect for workouts, road trips, or just starting the day with good energy.

Why This Matters to a Millionaire Educator
Life isn’t only about money and financial goals. It’s about enjoying the journey. Midnight Generation’s eternally krunk grooves remind me to stay active, keep discovering new things, and celebrate the good times — no matter your age.

If you haven’t heard them yet, start with “Young Girl” or “Trouble.”

Have you discovered any great bands later in life? What’s something new you’re loving right now? Drop it in the comments — I’m always looking for recommendations.
